What is a SIDRM (or sidearm) page? It stands for “So I Don’t Repeat Myself.” Isn’t that just an FAQ? Well, that’s half of it. It’s also what I call my standard rants. After a few years of flamewarsenthusiastic discussions on email lists I realized I kept making certain points over and over again. Eventually I started writing [insert standard rant on ---] or [insert standard rant #] instead of writing the things out again.
So, along with questions that get asked a lot I’ll be collecting the rants here.

FAQ Answers
- Your links to Powell’s and others have affiliate links. Are you trying to make money on this site?
- Yes I am. I put a lot of time and energy into this site. I don’t find it unreasonable, when I lead you to something useful, that I should see some income from the sale. If what you’re really asking is “if you make a buck how can I trust your recommendations” please see Rant 1.
- Is this your only blog?
- No, it is one of three. I also write a blog about role playing games, Places to Go, People to Be. Finally, I am working to start a blog about software development, concentrating on my journey developing my skills in the field and the idea of craftsmanship in software development, The Fluent Programmer.
The Rants
- How I handle affiliate links.
- Like many websites I have joined several affiliate programs that allow you to buy items you see on my site. I do get a commission on these sales. I do not recommend anything that we do not believe will help you build a live on your terms and that you love. I also believe you have a right to know when my recommendations can result in payment to me if you buy them.
The truth is in the long term I want to earn some income from Dark Etiquette. While at its heart are my philosophical ramblings I find no reason not to profit if I introduce people to worth while things. That said, if you learn even a little about life and how to build a live you love the site has succeeded even if I never see a dime of revenue from your visits. I believe Havi Brooks of The Fluent Self is correct to believe in the generosity of strangers. I know if that belief is to be fulfilled I must be one myself.
